MT5 was released in 2011 as a successor to MetaTrader 4, the world's most popular retail Forex trading platform.
MetaTrader 4 vs. 5
If you are comfortable trading on MetaTrader 4, you might wonder what MetaTrader 5 has to offer:
- CFDs on stocks, indices and commodities alongside Forex (MT4 is primarily focussed on the Forex market). Note that the range of markets and securities will ultimately depend on your broker.
- Six types of pending orders and two types of stop orders (MT4 has four types of pending orders).
- A wider choice of chart time-frames.
- Additional technical indicators
Automated trading
MetaTrader 5 also supports Expert Advisors, robots that allow you to automate trades and account management tasks. However, you should note that MetaTrader 4 robots are not compatible with MetaTrader 5. If you are particularly keen on using a certain EA, you'll need to check compatibility with your chosen platform.
You can write your own EAs with MetaQuotes Language 5 (MQL5), the platform's built-in programming language. MQL5 is an object-orientated programming language which means you'll feel right at home with it if you're familiar with C++, C#, VB.NET or Java.
Mobile trading
MetaTrader 5 is also available on iPhone and Android. Manage your account, trade online and perform technical analysis drawing on 14 of the most popular indicator in one place.
