An Expert Advisor, also known as EA, is a programme written for the MetaTrader platform. An EA can suggest trade ideas or even execute trades on your behalf without your intervention. EAs allow automated trading strategies and can facilitate scalping.

However, some MetaTrader brokers restrict certain EAs or forbid them altogether. This is often the case for brokers that act as a market marker or counter-party to your trades and those with a dealing desk where trades require human intervention. Please note that all brokers featured in the comparison table on this page accept all Expert Advisors with no restrictions at all.

Brokers use the following tactics to either disable or restrict EAs at will:

  • Disable all scripts in their implementation of MetaTrader. This would block all Expert Advisors outright.
  • Refuse to execute your trades if they believe you are trading from an Expert Advisor. They can usually tell if you trade in and out at the speed of light or your EA leaves a consistent footprint. We recommend against circumventing your broker’s restrictions as this could put you in breach of your account’s term of use.
