A short history of Bitcoin's price
When Bitcoin's exchange rate was first established against the US Dollar in October 2009, one U.S. Dollar bought 1,309.03 Bitcoins. As the crypto-currency had no price history, Bitcoin's exchange rate was initially set using an equation that considered the amount of electricity require to mine one unit of the currency.
It wasn't long before people tried to spend their Bitcoins in the real world. However, few merchants accepted the currency. The first real-world Bitcoin transaction happened on May 22nd 2010 in Florida when Laszlo Hanyecz, a programmer, offered to pay 10,000 Bitcoins for a US$ 25 pizza on the Bitcoin Forum. In today's prices, 10,000 Bitcoins are worth over US$ 64 million.
Bitcoin's price continued to rise steadily. And by June 2011, Bitcoin had reached parity with the U.S. cent. In other words, 1 U.S. Dollar would buy 100 Bitcoins.
Bitcoin's price peaked around US$ 17,900 in December 2017. By then, it had risen by more than 1,700% over the course of 2017, and was up 80% in December alone.
Since, Bitcoin's price has fallen to approximately US$ 6,400. You may buy Bitcoin directly on eToro.com, or speculate on the price of Bitcoin against the US Dollar with a CFD broker, such as easyMarkets.com or HYCM.com.
